Affiché

Affiché examines the political poster as a site where revolution, gender, and image-making converge. Drawing on Palestinian and Arab revolutionary graphics from the 1960s and 1970s, the project considers how the figure of the Palestinian fighter was made visible internationally through a narrow set of signs: body, gun, uniform, keffiyeh, and the codified pose of the fighter.

Generation after Generation, a ten panel suite within Affiché, focuses on the image of the female revolutionary, including figures such as Leila Khaled, whose image circulated beyond biography into icon. The work recognizes the power of these images within the Palestinian national movement while also examining how mass media and revolutionary visual culture both shaped the fighter into a symbol.

Across the project, Alshaibi places the female fighter in relation to other figures of Palestinian continuity, including the female farmer and archival images of Arab women produced through Orientalist fantasy. These counter-images bring two visual regimes into contact: the woman pictured as imperial subject and the woman pictured as revolutionary subject.

Screenprint is central to the project’s logic. Its capacity for reproduction recall the visual economy of the political poster itself, where images are designed to travel, multiply, and become collective memory.
