As a verb, “link” also describes the act of joining two discrete units. Silsila represents the joining of individuals to one another, humans with the natural world, and the self to the divine. Inspired by the intrepid fourteenth century-explorer and scholar Ibn Batūtah, Alshaibi retraced his journeys through the Middle East, North Africa, and the Maldives—a group of Southeast Asian islands threatened by rising sea levels. Silsila’s powerful images provoke contemporary questions about borders, migration, and environmental demise in relation to the human body. Deftly interrogating themes of identity, power, sexuality, and home, this exhibition resists simple stereotypes with outstanding artworks from both emerging and well-established artists. The year’s event boasts eighty invited artists from fifty countries, exhibited in three exhibition venues: the Palace of the Arts and the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, both within the Cairo Opera House premises in Guezira, as well as the Aicha Fahmy Palace (formerly known as the Center of the Arts) in Zamalek. Each of the three venues will host a blend of Installation, video works, photography, painting, sculpture and interdisciplinary projects. Viewers at the Biennale venues can also experience several site-specific installations and projections. The Cairo International Biennale was created in the early eighties of the last century as Pan-Arab and international hub, then gradually metamorphosed into a truly international exhibition in biennial format. It is the second oldest art biennale in the Middle East region, after the Alexandria Biennale, that started in the early fifties of the last century to mirror the Venice Biennale across the Mediterranean. For the 13th edition of the Biennale, Artistic Director Ehab El-Labban resumes his directorial role for the third time. For CB 13, Labban has chosen the title of Eyes East Bound, an invitation for artists to explore the colonial term “the Orient.” In his curatorial text, Labban reflects, “While creating our Eyes East Bound Cairo Biennale 13 today, we believe that we are at an age of post “everything”. We share the belief of John Berger, who believes that we have always been seduced –and many times cheated—by elaborative text proposed by professionals; words that are transformed from simple “hypothesis” to “factual reference” by time; simply by age. The consequences are always a reality that lacks clarity, relativity is ultimately lost, and the prison of terms and expressions follows. Eyes East Bound is an attempt to shed light on the universality and timelessness of the art and its makers, collaboratively and non-confrontationally, apart from all barriers and frontiers of ideology and geopolitics”. The grant offers financial support to fine art, documentary, or photojournalist works-in-progress and includes a cash award to help complete a project as well as platforms for feedback and professional development opportunities for the work’s final stages. This grant is awarded to projects that are still in progress. Juror Lucy Gallun, Associate Curator, Department of Photography, The Museum of Modern Art, New York shares her thoughts on her selection: "I feel extremely fortunate to have served as the juror for CENTER’s 2019 Project Development Grant. The breadth and diversity of submitted projects was truly impressive, and through the process of reviewing over 600 submissions I was exposed to an astounding array of new work. Many of the submitted projects address urgent issues of our time — including series related to climate crises, global migration, and visibility of at-risk or oppressed populations, among many other complex and often-intersecting subjects. Though perhaps not obvious from first glance, Sama Alshaibi’s Carry Over is such a project. (To use the artist’s own words from her accompanying statement, “the project resists superficial analysis.”) Ingeniously and exquisitely conceived utilizing a photographic process associated with the early histories of the medium — albumen printing — Alshaibi’s work not only looks back, but also reflects upon the current moment and the persistent effects of these photographic histories on contemporary representations of women. As witnesses to history, Alshaibi's family's memories act as a personal testimony that objects to the effacement of events that have shaped geography and modern-day politics. Birthright, based on her family's exile, uses the body as a symbol, the retrospective witness that links the present to a time before they were refugees, exiles, and labeled "terrorists". The quintessential woman, the pregnant mother, performs the injustices, defying all attempts to obliterate the Palestinian history and who they collectively are.
